Chapter 31

Ruth and Georgie entered Interview Room 3 and saw two plain clothes officers sitting at one of the tables. Ruth introduced herself and Georgie as they walked over.

The male officer, in his late 40s, got up and approached with an expressionless face. ‘Detective Inspector Reece Chilmark.’ He shook their hands firmly. Possibly too firmly in Ruth’s opinion. Maybe he was overcompensating for something, she wondered.

Chilmark was short and top heavy – all chest and shoulders. His head was big and round. His black hair was flecked with premature grey as was his thick black beard. His eyes were blue and clear. He wore a cobalt blue shirt and navy tie.

‘This is my colleague, Detective Sergeant Chrissie White,’ Chilmark explained in a formal tone gesturing to the thin, slightly gaunt woman in her 50s. She had high cheekbones and paper fine, translucent skin. There was a ring of fine lines around her mouth – the tell-tale sign of a smoker. Ruth was aware that she had the same.

‘Hi there,’ White said with a blank expression.

They all sat down.

Chilmark moved over a folder and then looked at them. ‘As I explained to your colleague, we’re officers from the National Crime Agency.’

Ruth wondered why the NCA wanted to talk to her. Maybe it was to do with a past case? She wondered if it had anything to do with Nick and Curtis Blake. For a second, her stomach tightened. Ruth had been digging around in several places where she shouldn’t. She had also put out several ‘informal’ feelers to anyone she knew at Merseyside Police. Maybe they had come to tell her to back off and keep her nose out of any of their investigations.

The National Crime Agency was the UK police’s lead unit for investigating organised crime and drug trafficking. It had a strategic role across the whole country when it came to organised crime gangs. It was also the UK’s point of contact for foreign agencies such as Interpol.

Chilmark opened a folder and turned it so that Ruth and Georgie could see. Inside was a photo of Liam and Declan Flaherty. ‘We understand that you are conducting a murder investigation into a woman called Molly Burgess? Could you fill us in with where you’re up to with that?’

Ruth was relieved that the NCA officers were there because of something to do with the Flaherty brothers, and not Nick or Curtis Blake. She nodded. ‘That’s right.’ She then pointed to the photograph. ‘I don’t know if you’re aware, but Liam and Declan Flaherty run a company called Go Rib Ride. Molly Burgess ran a company called Llandudno Boat Tours. We got the feeling that Go Rib Ride had taken trade from them since they set up. Molly Burgess had been very vocal about her feelings towards Liam and Declan Flaherty. One of their boats was damaged and sunk about eighteen months ago. There were rumours that Molly had done it but a police investigation proved inconclusive. Needless to say, there is a fair amount of bad blood between them.
